Brief History
The idea of Shanthinilayam, Old Age Home for our senior sisters of Indian Province was the brain child of our late Mother General Rev.Sr.Marie De Montfort of her sweet memories.
At that time in 1963, during the visitation of the Superior General and Council, Mother General promised financial support to maintain Senior Sisters’ Home and for its establishment. In 1975, they adjusted in the community of Somajiguda and opened for them a community on 26th May 1975, in the same Provincial House. 7 sisters were joined the community. Later on some more sisters joined gradually.
During this period, the following sisters were Superiors:
Rev.Sr. Regina Gopu : 1975 – 1976
Rev.Sr. Anna Theresa Singareddy : 1976 – 1978
Rev.Sr. Paula Arackal : 1979 – 1987
Rev.Sr. Emmauella Gopu : 1987 – 1988
Rev.Sr. Paula Arackal : 1988 – 1994
Many sisters were becoming sick and needed medical aid in the hospital. Sr.Anna Maria Gali, the then Provincial Superior thought of building a separate Home in Sanathnagar. The Shanthinilayam building was ready in 1991 and shifted all the sisters to Sanathnagar new building attached to St.Theresa’s Convent. It was a common kitchen for both the communities and expenses were met by the Provincialate. Sr.Theresa Joseph Theruviparambil was the Superior from 1994 to 2002.
In the annals of JMJ Shanthinilayam’s history, a great event took place in the year 2016. The General Council felt the need of a new building for the senior sisters with all its facilities. It was Sr.Fatima Kommareddy and Sr. Joseph Mary Kata planned and it was executed.
The blessing of the house took place on 26th May 2019 with Holy Eucharist by Rev.Fr.Jay Paul Reddy, Parish Priest of St.Theresa’s Church, Sanathnagar. The building was inaugurated by Rev.Sr.Mukta Xess the present Provincial Superior and Rev.Sr.Celine Alapat the previous Provincial Superior.
